Victoria University are on the brink of another championship after edging Uganda Martyrs University 21–19 in a tense finale at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds — a result that extended their dominance in the 2025 University 7s Series.

Having already triumphed in the opening circuit at Makerere University, the hosts once again proved too resilient, though their margin of victory narrowed this time around. What began as a comfortable reign is now being seriously tested by a spirited Uganda Martyrs side.

Victoria University won last year’s event.

Victoria took control early through tries from Dan Katerega, Blaise Ochieng, and Stuart Mwayi, with Katerega and Mwayi adding crucial conversions that made all the difference in the end. UMU fought back through Moses Ali, Eku Emmanuel, and Peter Sekabira, but two missed conversions proved costly.

While Victoria rely on the leadership and finishing of Daniel Otim and Humphrey Ndahura, UMU’s resurgence has been fuelled by the Ocen–Opio twins from Rhinos RFC, who continue to inject pace and power into their attack.

Elsewhere, traditional heavyweights like Makerere, UCU, and Kyambogo have struggled for consistency, leaving Victoria’s path to a third straight crown relatively clear.

With just the final circuit remaining — to be hosted by Makerere this Sunday — Victoria University need only a place in the final to clinch the overall title and cement their dynasty as the undisputed giants of university rugby.
