Uganda’s U17 side has rewritten yet another chapter in their unfolding World Cup miracle, this time by outlasting a fiercely determined Senegal to book a place in the Round of 16. What began as a quiet debut campaign has quickly transformed into one of the most captivating storylines in Qatar.

At the sun-soaked Aspire Zone on Saturday, the Cubs showed a maturity far beyond their age, managing the game with discipline, courage and a level of composure that frustrated the Young Lions of Teranga throughout. The difference on the night came early an electric moment created from nothing and finished with authority.

Just a quarter of an hour in, Abubakali Walusimbi produced a strike that will live long in tournament memory. A loose ball outside the box, one quick look up, and the midfielder unleashed a low, venomous drive that nestled into the corner. The goal didn’t just give Uganda a lead it gave them belief.

Fresh from their stunning victory over France, the Cubs carried the swagger of giant-killers into the clash, dictating early tempo and pressing Senegal into hurried decisions. Coach Brian Ssenyondo trusted the same frontline Arafat Nkoola, Richard Okello and James Bogere rewarding their chemistry and tireless work rate from the previous match.

But as the minutes ticked by, Senegal threw everything forward. Waves of pressure crashed against Uganda’s backline, but goalkeeper Edrisah Waibi stood like a wall carved from stone. Diving low, stretching wide, and commanding his box, Waibi delivered a heroic performance worthy of his eventual Man of the Match award.

Uganda suffered a setback when captain Hamuza Ssengooba was withdrawn following a heavy aerial collision, but the reshuffled side held firm. Senegal twice thought they had rescued the game first with a penalty shout overturned on review, and later with a late equaliser ruled offside but destiny seemed to lean towards the East Africans.

When the final whistle blew, the Cubs’ celebrations told a story: not just of victory, but of a team discovering its identity fearless, resilient, unshakeable.

Uganda now advances to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner between Germany and Burkina Faso. Their dream grows bigger, their confidence sharper, and their World Cup journey ever more magical.
