Following its certification by the National Council of Sports under the new Sports Act, Badminton Uganda has stepped up efforts to promote and develop the sport across the country.

The federation has embarked on a countrywide campaign aimed at equipping teachers with badminton skills so they can introduce and develop the sport in schools.

Namutumba District in the Busoga region is among the areas that have benefited from the initiative.
A two-day Shuttle Time workshop held at Kaswabuli Secondary School attracted 16 secondary school teachers from across Namutumba District.

The training equipped the teachers with basic badminton knowledge, coaching skills and techniques that they can use to introduce the sport to learners in their respective schools.

Speaking during the workshop, Badminton Uganda Chief Executive Officer Simon Mugabi said the campaign will continue despite the federation’s certification by the National Council of Sports.

Mugabi said Badminton Uganda is also targeting federation status in the near future, adding that this can only be achieved by spreading the sport to all parts of the country.

The initiative has been welcomed by teachers and other stakeholders, who say taking badminton training closer to communities will help increase participation and provide learners with opportunities to develop their talents.

Badminton Uganda says it will continue with the Shuttle Time campaign in other parts of the country as it seeks to build a strong grassroots foundation for the sport.
