Namuwongo Blazers delivered one of the most emphatic performances of the National Basketball League season, thrashing Kampala Rockets 110-64 at Abja Park in Nalya on Wednesday.
The night belonged to Paul “McGyver” Odong, who etched his name into league history with a sensational shooting display. The guard exploded for a record 53 points, the highest individual score ever recorded in an NBL game, while also setting a new benchmark for three-pointers made in a single match with 15 successful attempts from beyond the arc.
Odong’s remarkable outing extended beyond scoring, as he also collected 14 rebounds to cap a memorable double-double performance.
Despite the final scoreline, Kampala Rockets showed early resistance. Francis Kasinde’s late three-pointer helped keep the contest close at the end of the opening quarter, with the Rockets trailing by just one point at 24-23.
The game, however, swung heavily in the Blazers’ favour during the second period. Odong caught fire from long range, knocking down four triples as Namuwongo stretched their advantage to 55-38 by halftime.
The league leaders returned from the break with even greater intensity, dominating both ends of the court and extending their lead to 31 points heading into the final quarter.
Any hopes of a Rockets comeback were extinguished in the closing period as the Blazers’ defence tightened, restricting their opponents to only nine points and sealing a commanding 46-point victory.
Nyemeck Kevin registered a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Kasereka Tembo contributed 15 points for the winners.
For Kampala Rockets, Kasinde finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Gideon Kasasa added 17 points in a losing effort.
