The 21st edition of the Buganda Masaza Cup kicks off on Saturday as defending champions Buddu host record champions Gomba at the Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka City.
Buddu aims to make history by becoming the first team to successfully defend their title, having lifted their third Masaza Cup title last year after edging Kyaggwe 1-0 in the final.

Buddu’s New Chapter
Under new head coach Erick Kisuze and captain Joseph Kayondo, Buddu has undergone significant changes since their last triumph. The team has signed new players, including Nicholas Junga from Kabula and Ivan Kanda from Mawokota. A positive start at home will be crucial in their bid to retain the crown.
Gomba’s Quest for Glory
Gomba, the tournament’s most successful team with five titles, is eager to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 campaign. Under the stewardship of Simon Ddungu, the team has vowed to put up a strong fight against their former champions. Gomba’s captain, Herbert Onen, who was signed from Buddu, expressed his readiness to face his former team and is optimistic about securing points.

Head-to-Head
The two teams have a rich history, with Gomba being the record champions with five trophies, while Buddu has three, with their latest win coming in 2024. The stage is set for an exciting encounter, with both teams looking to make a strong statement in the tournament.
