As the 2024/25 FUFA Big League draws to a close, the race for promotion to the Uganda Premier League has reached a fever pitch, with drama guaranteed on the final day this Saturday.

Calvary FC currently leads the standings, locked on 49 points with Buhimba United Saints. Interestingly, despite Buhimba having a superior goal difference (+14 compared to Calvary’s +12), it is Calvary who top the table due to an unconventional tiebreaker—virtual points. This relatively new system, introduced by FUFA, rewards teams that win matches by two or more goals. It remains a subject of debate, but it’s playing a pivotal role in this year’s title race.

Both Calvary and Buhimba stumbled over the weekend. Calvary settled for a goalless draw with Onduparaka in Arua, while Buhimba were edged 4-3 by Kigezi HomeBoyz in a high-scoring thriller. These results left both clubs still level on points, but FUFA’s complex tiebreaker rules pushed Calvary ahead.

According to FUFA’s ranking system outlined in Article 14(4) of its Competitions Rules, teams are separated first by points, then head-to-head goal aggregate, followed by virtual points, goal difference, goals scored, and fair play. Calvary and Buhimba drew level in their head-to-head meetings—Calvary winning 1-0 in Midigo and losing 2-1 in Kigaaya—bringing the aggregate to 2-2. With no advantage there, officials turned to virtual points, where Calvary holds a 6–4 edge, thanks to more decisive victories over the course of the season.

While the battle between Calvary and Buhimba dominates headlines, the scramble for the third promotion slot is just as intense. Gaddafi FC sits third with 47 points following a scoreless draw with Blacks Power. Just behind them are Paidha Black Angels and Blacks Power, both on 46 points. Paidha kept their dream alive with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Kiyinda Boys, while Blacks Power also remain in striking distance.

As the final whistle approaches this weekend, every moment will matter. Calvary has destiny in its hands—win and they secure a historic first promotion to the top flight. Buhimba must better Calvary’s result to overtake them. Meanwhile, Gaddafi will need a strong finish to fend off the surging Paidha and Blacks Power.

With five teams still vying for just three promotion spots, and the controversial virtual points rule poised to play a decisive role, this season’s FUFA Big League is set for a breathtaking conclusion where every goal could reshape the table.
