Burundi’s National Police dominated the first day of the East Africa Interforces Judo Championship, securing five gold medals in six categories at the Old Kampala Sports Arena.
Their impressive performance overshadowed teams from DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda in the third edition of the championship, organized by Uganda Police Force and sponsored by Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS).
Host Uganda Police managed five medals, including silver wins by Susan Awio (under 48kg) and Veronica Ayo (under 57kg), and bronze medals by Teddy Aloro (under 52kg), Joan Nabirye (under 57kg), and Gabriel Kiplimo (under 60kg). Burundi’s gold medalists included Arnaud Niyonyishu (under 66kg) and Lyn Irakoze (under 73kg), while DR Congo’s Jean Botihi Mongida took gold in the under 60kg category.
The championship concludes today, December 7, with the remaining categories: men’s under 81kg, 90kg, 100kg, and over 100kg, and women’s under 63kg, 70kg, 78kg, and above 78kg. Teams from Uganda, Burundi, DR Congo, Kenya, and Rwanda are vying for the top spot
