The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has issued a strong condemnation of what it described as unacceptable and unsporting behaviour involving some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 final between hosts Morocco and Senegal, played in Rabat on Sunday night.

In a firm statement released after the match, CAF expressed deep concern over incidents that occurred in the aftermath of the final whistle, stressing that such conduct runs contrary to the values of respect, fair play and professionalism that the continental body seeks to uphold across African football.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour that occurs during or after matches, particularly actions directed at the refereeing team or match organisers,” the statement read.

CAF emphasised that match officials and tournament organisers must be protected at all times, noting that respect for referees is a cornerstone of the game and essential to maintaining the integrity and credibility of CAF competitions.

The governing body confirmed that it has commenced a comprehensive review of all available footage and official reports related to the incidents. CAF added that the matter will be formally referred to the appropriate judicial and disciplinary bodies in line with its regulations.

“Any individuals found to have engaged in misconduct will face the necessary and appropriate sanctions,” CAF stated, underlining its zero-tolerance stance on behaviour that undermines the spirit of the competition.

The AFCON 2025 final, one of the most watched matches on the African football calendar, brought together two of the continent’s football powerhouses in a high-stakes encounter. While the tournament itself was widely praised for its organisation, atmosphere and quality of football, CAF was keen to ensure that events off the pitch do not overshadow the progress made.

CAF reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the image of African football and called on players, team officials and all stakeholders to act responsibly, especially on football’s biggest stages.

Further details, including potential disciplinary measures, are expected once the review process has been concluded and the relevant bodies have made their determinations. This all started after Morocco were awarded a later penalty which Senegal players and technical team protested including getting off the pitch. It had involve Sadio Mane that Senegal players decided to come back on the pitch and the penalty was taken but goalkeeper Edward Mendy stopped Brahim Diaz’s attempt forcing the final beyond the 90 minutes.
