The UCU Canons will tonight test their mettle against the Namuwongo Blazers as the National Basketball League (NBL) semifinals get underway at the MTN Arena, Lugogo. It is a clash that pits underdogs against favorites, but one with a twist — UCU is among the few teams that managed to hand the Blazers a defeat during the regular season.

For the Blazers, who topped the table and have carried the tag of title contenders all season, the pressure will be on to prove that their consistency can translate into playoff dominance. UCU, on the other hand, arrive in the semis on the back of renewed belief after escaping the quarterfinals with a statement performance.

Just days ago, the Canons looked like they were headed for an early exit when they lost Game 1 of their series against the Kampala Rockets by a single point. What followed, however, was a ruthless transformation. UCU bounced back with back-to-back wins, including Sunday’s emphatic 64-38 triumph that sealed the series.

Guard Jimmy Otim led the way with 18 points in Game 3, while Lwabaga Ibanda and Marvin Okurut added 10 each. Coach Nick Natuhereza’s side effectively killed the contest in the first half, outscoring the Rockets 34-18 before cruising to victory.

The Rockets, meanwhile, will look back at their campaign with pride. Pauti Kikomba scored 15 points and Mpiya Juf 11 in the decisive game, but their inexperience showed as they squandered two chances to make their first-ever semifinal appearance.

Now the Canons face a much sterner test in the Blazers, whose depth, balance, and discipline made them the standout team of the regular season. Still, UCU’s fighting spirit and ability to rise from the brink make them dangerous opponents capable of springing a surprise.

The other semifinal features defending champions City Oilers taking on Sommet Spartans. The two sides split their regular season meetings 1–1, but Oilers head into the series with reinforcements in Chad Bowie and Kurt Wegscheider, both expected to add firepower to a roster already rich in championship pedigree.

As the spotlight shifts to Lugogo, the question lingers: can the Canons carry their momentum into a series against the league’s most consistent side, or will the Blazers reinforce their dominance on the road to the finals?
