As the Uganda U20 National Team (the Hippos) prepares for a high-stakes CECAFA U20 Championship semifinal showdown against Sudan, confidence in the camp is sky-high.
Laryea Kingston’s youth side has taken the tournament by storm, and the players are eager to secure a spot in the finals.
While speaking to Rora Madia in Dar es Salaam, ahead of the crucial knockout fixture, Ugandan star Elvis Opakrwoth reflected on their previous encounter with Sudan while emphasizing that the team is physically and tactically prepared for the battle ahead.
“We Know What to Expect”Uganda and Sudan are no strangers to one another, having battled in a grueling contest earlier in the tournament.
While Opakrwoth acknowledges the threat Sudan poses, he believes that the previous matchup gave the Hippos the exact blueprint needed to execute a winning game plan.
“We shared the pitch with Sudan just the other day,” Opakrwoth stated. “It was an incredibly tough, physical battle, but we showed great character to come out on top. The silver lining is that we now have a very clear picture of how they play, their strengths, and where we can exploit them.
With the fast-paced nature of tournament football, recovery has been a top priority for Kingston’s technical bench. According to Opakrwoth, the squad has fully shaken off the fatigue of the group stages and is firing on all cylinders.
“We’ve had a highly productive recovery session,” the Ugandan youngster added. “The energy in camp is fantastic. The players are locked in, the coaching staff has laid out the tactical plan, and we are completely ready to face them in the semifinals.
Under the guidance of former Ghanaian international Laryea Kingston, the Hippos have played an exciting, unified brand of football.
By implementing a seamless philosophy across Uganda’s youth ranks, Kingston has instilled a winning mentality that Opakrwoth and his teammates are eager to put on display once more.
A victory against Sudan will not only send the Hippos to the CECAFA U20 final but also bring them one step closer to securing a coveted ticket to the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
