Uganda’s senior women’s national football team, the Crested Cranes, will look to bounce back from their opening match defeat when they face South Sudan today at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam. After losing 1-0 to Burundi in their first game, the Crested Cranes are under pressure to register their first points of the tournament.

Crucial Match for Both Teams

South Sudan, who suffered a 4-0 defeat to hosts Tanzania in their opening match, will also be aiming for redemption. The Bright Starlets had a challenging start to the tournament, but with a rest day since then, they could pose a stern test for the Cranes.

Crested Cranes’ Determination

Assistant captain Zainah Nandede said the team is motivated to deliver an improved display. “It was a tough loss to Burundi, but the coaches have worked hard to fix the mistakes. We’re focused on securing three points against South Sudan,” she noted.

Potential Changes to Starting XI

Uganda may make several changes to their starting XI, with defenders Shakirah Nankwanga and Brenda Munyana, along with forward Sylvia Kabene, potentially replacing Jamirah Nabulime, Docus Lwalisa, and Jovia Nakagolo.

Goalkeeper Under Scrutiny

Goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro, expected to retain her place, will be under scrutiny following her error that led to Burundi’s winning goal.

High Stakes

To boost their chances of topping the standings, Uganda must not only win but do so emphatically. A goal margin of more than four would place them ahead of Tanzania on goal difference, although this also depends on Kenya overcoming Burundi in today’s early fixture.

Tournament Format

The 2025 CECAFA Championship, running until June 21, follows a round-robin format, with the top team crowned champions. Today’s result could shape the trajectory of Uganda’s tournament.
