The CAF U-17 AFCON 2027 CECAFA Qualifiers concluded with a fascinating array of tactical data, highlighting a tournament defined by rapid starts, clinical finishing, and extraordinary individual creativity.
Across 13 matches, the region’s rising stars treated fans to 36 total goals, telling a story of intense competition, clinical playmaking, and unforgettable tournament drama.
The First-Half Blitz: Where Games Were Won
Rora Media’s Smith Michael Mugote analyzes the tournament and looks closely at a staggering discrepancy: teams were vastly more lethal in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Out of 35 standard goals scored (excluding own goals), 22 goals (63%) were converted in the first half, compared to just 13 goals (37%) in the second.
This trend was epitomized by Ethiopia U17, who scored a whopping 80% of their tournament goals (4 out of 5) before the half-time whistle.
This rapid-out-of-the-blocks approach was mirrored in the record books, with lightning-fast openers paving the way for victory:
Abdikarin Abdulkadir (Somalia U17): Shocked Tanzania with a goal in the 1st minute on Matchday 2.
Jemba Shafie Lukasha (Uganda U17): Stunned opponents just 2 minutes into the high-stakes Semi-Finals.
Pacifique Bahati (Rwanda U17): Dispatched a brilliant 2nd-minute free kick against Sudan.
Sudden Turnarounds & The Sudan Derby Heartbreak
The statistical preference for first-half dominance was completely thrown out the window during the tournament’s most emotionally charged fixture: the Sudan Derby between Sudan U17 and South Sudan U17
Sudan looked completely in control early on, building a 2-0 cushion before the 40th minute through quickfire goals from Anwar Abdalrahim Abeker Ishag (36′) and Radi Ahmed Salim Ibrahim (39′).
However, South Sudan mounted a spectacular comeback. Samson Panuel pulled one back for the Bright Stars just before the half-time whistle (45+3′), and Mobil Anyieth leveled the score at 2-2 early in the second half (52′).
The ultimate heartbreak of the derby arrived in the 74th minute. Sudan’s Abubaker Rashed Eltom Mohamed—who had previously found the back of the net in the tournament for his own team—unfortunately scored an own goal into his own net. The costly error completed South Sudan’s stunning 3-2 comeback victory and went down as the tournament’s only official own goal.
Uganda’s Offensive Masterclass & Creative Kings
No team left a bigger imprint on the stat sheet than Uganda U17. The tournament heavyweights were an offensive juggernaut, registering 13 goals across their 4 games.
They also laid claim to the tournament’s most explosive single performance—a ruthless 8-0 demolition of Burundi U17 on Matchday 1, which stood as the biggest win and highest-scoring fixture of the campaign.
Uganda’s attacking threat was spearheaded by Arnold Kayemba, who finished as the tournament’s outright top marksman with 4 goals, including a quickfire first-half brace against Burundi.
However, Kayemba’s goals were heavily powered by an incredible playmaking unit. Uganda’s Junior Ofoyrwoth was the undisputed creative king of the qualifiers, racking up a tournament-high 5 assists.
Behind him, a chasing pack of creators consisting of Fuad Nageso Roba (Ethiopia), Pacifique Bahati (Rwanda), and Uganda’s own Shaldon Ssevume and Arnold Kayemba each set up 2 assists for their respective squads.
Defensive Fortresses & Safe Hands
While Uganda grabbed headlines for their firepower, they were equally formidable at the back, recording 3 clean sheets.
Uganda’s shot-stopper Dean David Ssegirinya, Rwanda’s Emmanuel Nsengiyumva, and Somalia’s Khali Nor shared the golden glove honors, each keeping 2 clean sheets to anchor their respective backlines.
Rwanda showed incredible tactical balance, sharing their 6 tournament goals among six completely different scorers (including Khalifa Shyaka, Heylen Jayden Shema, and Isaac Ndizeye), proving that a spread-out collective could rival individual brilliance.
With the qualifiers wrapped up, the tactical identity of East African youth football looks clear: aggressive, high-pressing starts, a reliance on clinical first-half execution, and fine-margin drama where a single mistimed clearance can completely swing a derby.
