The New York Red Bulls have confirmed Ibrahim Sekagya as their new First Team Assistant Coach on a full-time basis. Sekagya, a former Uganda Cranes central defender and captain, joins the first team after leading NYRB II to a great start in the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season.
Sekagya’s Achievements with NYRB II
As NYRB II Head Coach since February 2023, Sekagya has led the team to their best start in franchise history, with an 8-2-2 record and 27 points accumulated. He has also developed talented players like Omar Valencia and Mohammed Sofo, who have made significant contributions to the first team.

Playing Career
Sekagya, a Kampala native, started his professional career at KCCA FC (formerly KCC) before joining the New York Red Bulls in 2013. He made 33 appearances for the club before retiring in 2015. Sekagya also played for Red Bull Salzburg, making 225 appearances, and represented Uganda, earning 35 caps and scoring three goals.
International Experience
As a former Uganda Cranes captain, Sekagya played in World Cup qualifiers for the 2006 and 2010 tournaments. He retired from international football in March 2012.
New Role
Sekagya will assume his new role as First Team Assistant Coach immediately, with his last match in charge of NYRB II being on June 15 against Chattanooga FC. A new NYRB II Head Coach will be announced at a later date.
