MOMBASA – Kenyan giants Bandari FC have turned to a familiar face and a regional legend to revive their season, officially appointing former SC Villa striker Bernard Mwalala as their new head coach.

Mwalala, a man whose name still resonates at Villa Park from his playing days with the Jogoos, returns to the “Dockers” after resigning from his role at Shabana FC. The move marks a high-profile homecoming for Mwalala, who is tasked with returning Bandari to the pinnacle of East African football.

The Villa Connection & The Return to the Coast
For the Ugandan audience, Mwalala is best remembered as the clinical forward who led the line for SC Villa before transitioning into coaching. His return to Bandari is particularly significant as he reunites with one of Uganda’s finest exports in the Kenyan league, William Wadri.

Wadri flourished under Mwalala during the coach’s first stint in Mombasa, and fans are already anticipating that the duo will rediscover the chemistry that once made Bandari the most feared team at the Kenyan coast.

A Legacy of Success
Mwalala isn’t just a former player; he is the most successful manager in Bandari’s recent history. During his previous tenure (2018–2020), he achieved milestones that the club has struggled to replicate since his departure:

Silverware: He delivered the 2019 FKF Cup, which remains the club’s most recent major trophy.

Continental Ambition: He took Bandari to the final preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup, nearly upsetting Guinean powerhouse AS Horoya.

Regional Dominance: He led the team to the SportPesa Cup final in Tanzania and secured back-to-back runners-up finishes in the Kenyan Premier League.

The Task Ahead
Mwalala inherits a squad that has struggled for consistency this season. However, with the financial backing of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and a “Ugandan General” in William Wadri already in the dressing room, the former Villa striker is confident of a turnaround.

“Bandari is home,” Mwalala said during his unveiling. “We have the quality, and we have the fans. Now it’s time to get back to winning ways and bring trophies back to Mombasa.”

Fast Facts: Bernard Mwalala
Playing Career: Former SC Villa (Uganda) and Harambee Stars (Kenya) striker.

Managerial Peak: 2019 FKF Cup Winner with Bandari FC.

Continental Experience: Led teams in CAF Confederation Cup and SportPesa Cup.

Current Club: Bandari FC (Rejoined Jan 2026).
