Mbarara City’s fight for survival in the Uganda Premier League took another hit on Thursday after they were stunned late on in a 2-1 defeat to Police at Rwamwanja Stadium in Kamwenge.

What looked like a crucial step toward recovery turned into another painful setback for the Ankole Lions, who surrendered a second-half lead and conceded a stoppage-time winner in a match they desperately needed to control.

Muhammad Kanyike had given Mbarara City hope just before the break, finishing clinically to send the hosts into halftime with the advantage. At that stage, it looked like a timely response in their bid to pull away from the relegation zone.

However, Police gradually took control after the restart and found their breakthrough in the 73rd minute when Daniel Jakony restored parity, shifting momentum firmly in favour of the visitors.

As Mbarara City struggled to regain rhythm, the Cops pushed forward in search of a winner—and were rewarded deep into added time when substitute Paul Mark Teny struck after coming off the bench, sealing a dramatic turnaround.

The defeat extends Mbarara City’s poor run, with the side now winless in seven straight matches and managing just one win in their last twelve outings, a lone victory against bottom-placed Calvary back in February.

Going into the fixture, Mbarara City sat 14th on the table with 16 points, only one above the relegation zone, making the encounter a must-win in their survival battle.

Instead, the result leaves them increasingly vulnerable as pressure builds with each passing round.

For Police, the win ends a frustrating run of two straight defeats to Express and NEC, lifting morale as they climb to seventh place with 37 points and reinforcing their mid-table stability.
