The Second SOM Chess Easter Championship concluded at the Sports Outreach Ministry (SOM) Academy in Katwe, Uganda with notable performances in both the Men’s open and Women’s Categories.
Ndirangu Joyce Nyaruai demonstrated her prowess, clinching the championship among women after securing six points from eight games. Harunah Nsubuga emerged victorious in the men’s open in tight game with Njoroge Martin.

The four days SOM Easter Chess Championship attracted impressive turn out of 157 Skilled player from diverse corners of the globe including Kenya, South Sudan, USA and the hosts Uganda. The global came together to compete according to age groups including U10, U12, U14, U16, U19, differently abled, Junior and Open in both girls and boys respectively.
“This win catalyzes me to intensify my preparation and deliver a strong performance while representing our nation on global stage,” Ndirangu Joyce Nyaruai remarked.
Harunah Nsubuga who finished third in the last year’s edition expressed his joy with Roramedia.

“I have been actively participating in tournaments leading up to this championship, allowing me to implement various strategies that ultimately led to this victory. This win not only signify personal growth but also validates the effort of my coaches,” he stated.
Robert Katende, the proprietor of SOM Chess Academy, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the tournament second edition’s turnout and praised the supporters and the organization team.
“Thanks you our partners, friends, and well wishers for your continued support towards this work of restoring hope and transforming lives through chess, one move at a time, since 2004,” he stated.

Through Robert Katende’s initiative foundation with the support of madam Kavyshree Mallanna, founder of the celestial minds Chess organization from Boston, USA sponsored Celestial Minds Blitz the fide rated chess tournament that was won by Emmanuel Egesa in the men’s Category while the women category won Kavyshree Mallanna .
