Vipers SC tightened their grip on the Uganda Premier League title race with a composed 2–0 victory over Mbarara City FC at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, reclaiming top spot despite having a game in hand.

The Venoms were made to work hard in the opening stages as Mbarara City arrived with a clear plan to frustrate and crowd the midfield. For much of the first half, the visitors held firm, limiting space and forcing Vipers to rely on crosses and half chances.

Opportunities did come. Karim Watambala and Milton Karisa both went close with headers, while Karisa later forced goalkeeper Ismail Emuran into a smart save as pressure steadily mounted.

The breakthrough arrived five minutes before the break amid controversy. Karisa was brought down in the area by goalkeeper Fahad Emuran, prompting strong protests from Mbarara City players, but the referee stood by her decision. Allan Okello kept his nerve from the spot, sending Emuran the wrong way to give Vipers a 1–0 lead at halftime.

Vipers emerged sharper after the restart and wasted little time doubling their advantage. High pressing forced a defensive error, and Watambala reacted quickest to poke the loose ball into an empty net in the 51st minute, capping an energetic display.

From there, the hosts managed the game with maturity. Mbarara City rang the changes in search of a response, but Vipers’ back line remained solid, while Okello and company controlled possession and tempo.

Substitutions from both benches slowed the rhythm in the final stages, and Vipers comfortably saw out the contest to secure maximum points.

The result lifts Vipers to the top of the table on 27 points, one clear of KCCA FC, with a game still in hand. Mbarara City, meanwhile, remain 14th on the standings with 10 points, still searching for consistency as the season progresses.
