AFCON Today, 7pm
Egypt v Benin

Seven-time champions Egypt return to knockout football with familiar ambition and fresh pressure as they take on Benin in the Round of 16 at the Grande Stade d’Agadir on January 5. With an eighth continental crown firmly in their sights, the Pharaohs know that anything short of progress will be judged harshly at this stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

Benin approach the contest with far less baggage but no shortage of belief. The West Africans are seeking to reach the quarter-finals for just the second time in their AFCON history, hoping to recreate the resilience that carried them past Morocco on penalties in 2019. Kick-off is set for 17h00 local time (16h00 GMT), with expectations heavily tilted toward the North Africans.

History overwhelmingly favours Egypt. The teams have met four times across competitions, producing three Egyptian wins and one draw, with Benin still chasing a first victory in the fixture. Their only AFCON meeting came in 2010, when a relaxed Egypt side, already assured of top spot, eased to a 2–0 group-stage win. High-scoring encounters have also marked the rivalry, including a 3–3 World Cup qualifying draw in Cotonou and a 5–1 Egyptian friendly win in 2008.

Yet recent trends offer Benin a sliver of hope. Egypt have struggled to put away West African opponents in recent tournaments, drawing a succession of tight games and relying on penalties to survive deep into competitions. While they remain unbeaten in open play for several matches, clear-cut dominance has often proved elusive.

For Egypt, the focus will be on converting control into goals, with Mohamed Salah once again the central figure as he edges closer to double figures in AFCON scoring. Benin, by contrast, must find attacking inspiration after a group stage that yielded just one goal, while leaning heavily on organisation and mental strength if the tie drifts toward another tense finish.

On paper, it is a mismatch steeped in pedigree versus perseverance. On the pitch, however, knockout football leaves no room for comfort—and Benin will be eager to test whether Egypt’s quest for history can withstand one more stubborn challenge.
