AFCON Today, 10 pm
Nigeria v Mozambique

Nigeria’s march toward a fourth Africa Cup of Nations crown enters the knockout phase with a clash against debutants Mozambique, a side experiencing the business end of the tournament for the first time in their history. The Round of 16 tie will be staged at the Stade de Fès on January 5, under the lights at 20h00 local time (19h00 GMT).

For Nigeria, this is familiar ground. The Super Eagles arrive in Morocco with momentum, confidence and an attacking rhythm that carried them through a flawless group campaign. For Mozambique, the occasion represents a breakthrough moment—proof that years of persistence have finally delivered a seat at Africa’s top table, even if the challenge ahead could hardly be tougher.

The two nations have crossed paths before, and the balance has consistently tilted Nigeria’s way. Their only previous AFCON meeting came in 2010, when the West Africans swept to a 3–0 group-stage victory. Beyond that, Nigeria have never lost to Mozambique across five encounters in all competitions, including World Cup qualifiers and a recent high-scoring friendly in 2023.

Nigeria’s current form suggests a side comfortable with both possession and incision. They topped their group with maximum points, scoring freely and becoming the tournament’s most productive attack in the group phase. Having navigated this stage successfully in recent editions, the Super Eagles see the Round of 16 not as a hurdle but as a gateway to the latter stages, where their continental pedigree usually asserts itself.

Mozambique, however, have already rewritten their own history. A maiden AFCON finals victory in the group stage propelled them into the knockouts, ending a long wait that spanned five previous appearances. Their matches have been open, unpredictable and rich in goals—traits that make them dangerous outsiders despite a record that shows no clean sheets at the tournament.

The contrast in narratives is stark: Nigeria chasing silverware, Mozambique chasing belief. One side carries expectation, the other freedom. When they meet in Fès, experience will collide with ambition, and while the Super Eagles start as clear favourites, Mozambique’s story suggests they have already learned how to defy the script.
