President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially commissioned the National High Altitude Training Centre in Teryet, Kapchorwa, today Wednesday.
During the grand opening, the President promised to probe all those engaging in embezzling of sports funds and athletes’ bonuses.

It should be noted that President promised to give 5,000,000/- as bonus to athletes who win the country gold at international events, 3,000,000/- was promised for silver and 1,000,000/- for bronze winners but un fortunately most of the medal winners are yet to receive their bonuses.

“Am very glad that when out athletes started doing well using their talents, I was reminded that Kosikwe who won silver in 90’s was too from Sebei region. I promised to promote the natural talent of you people who come from the high altitude thus coming up with the ideal of constructing this facility,” Museveni said.
He further added that, “By the time I made this promise of the bonuses, we were not financially well but now I promise to increase on the bonuses and may be punish those who eat their bonuses.”
The ceremony was attended by minister of Education and Sports as well as wife to the President, Janet Museveni, Vice President Jesca Alupo, minister of state for Sports, Peter Ogwang, athlete Joshua Cheptegei, National Council of Sports officials among others.

This state-of-the-art facility’s phase one which has been completed features an athletic track, jogging track, artificial turf field, hostel, dining hall with an external kitchen, and modern sports equipment. This represents a significant step in Uganda’s commitment to sports development and fostering athletic talent.
The Teryet facility is to serve as a hub for athletic excellence, uplifting Uganda’s status as a leading destination for high-performance sports training and contributing to the long-term growth of its sports sector. The center is part of Uganda’s strategic efforts to improve sports infrastructure in preparation for co-hosting the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
