The stakes just got higher for Uganda’s national football team at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), thanks to a groundbreaking incentive announced by the country’s top office. His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has promised a colossal UGX 1.2 billion bonus to be awarded to the team for every match they win during the tournament — a historic move aimed at motivating the players to bring continental glory home.

The announcement was officially relayed to the team by the President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), Hon. Moses Hassim Magogo, who met with the players ahead of their opening CHAN fixture.

“This is a sign of how much the Head of State believes in this team and the importance he places on developing local talent,” Magogo told the players. “This is more than a football match — it’s a national mission, and the President has placed his trust and resources in you to make it a success.”

The pledge of UGX 1.2 billion per victory represents the largest single-match bonus ever promised to a Ugandan national sports team and reflects an increasing government interest in sport as a vehicle for national pride, youth empowerment, and international recognition.

CHAN 2024 — hosted under the banner “PAMOJA” in East Africa for the first time — is unique among continental tournaments as it features only players who compete in their home countries’ domestic leagues. For Uganda, this is an especially vital platform, as it highlights the depth of homegrown talent and provides an opportunity for young players to showcase their skills on a major stage.

President Museveni’s incentive is expected to supercharge the Cranes’ motivation in a tournament where margins between success and failure are often razor-thin. It also puts Uganda in a rare category among nations offering such substantial performance-based rewards in regional competitions.

The promise of this bonus not only boosts morale but also reaffirms the growing synergy between sports and government policy in Uganda. The country has made significant strides in sports infrastructure, talent development, and funding in recent years, with the government often stepping in to support international campaigns in athletics, netball, boxing, and now football.

For the players, this announcement couldn’t come at a better time. The CHAN tournament is seen as a springboard for local players aiming to catch the eye of scouts, clubs, and sponsors — and with billions on the line, every tackle, pass, and goal now carries greater meaning.

Team captain and veteran midfielder, who preferred to speak anonymously, noted that such support gives the players renewed purpose. “It’s not just about the money,” he said. “It shows that the country is behind us, and that fuels us to give more.”

As Uganda gears up for its CHAN 2024 opener, the message from State House is clear: the nation is watching, the rewards are unprecedented, and the dream of bringing the trophy home is now backed by record-setting government support.

With this bold gesture, President Museveni has not only challenged the Cranes to aim higher — he has raised the bar for sporting ambition across Uganda.
