Nigeria booked their place in the AFCON 2025 semi-finals with a composed 2–0 victory over Algeria, turning a tense contest into a statement performance after the break.

Rather than forcing the issue early, the Super Eagles showed patience against an Algerian side that arrived with discipline and belief. The opening half was a tactical chess match, with Nigeria circulating possession and probing for openings while the Desert Foxes sat deep and looked to spring forward on the counter. Chances were limited, and both defences largely held firm as the teams went in level at the interval.

Victor Osimhen was selected man of the match.

The game’s rhythm changed decisively within minutes of the restart. Nigeria returned with greater urgency and sharper movement, stretching Algeria’s defensive lines. That pressure paid off when Victor Osimhen imposed himself in the area, rising above his marker to guide home a pinpoint delivery and give Nigeria the breakthrough they had been searching for.

Akor scored the second goal adding on Osimhen’s.

Algeria were forced to open up, and Nigeria punished them almost immediately. With space finally available, Osimhen turned provider, threading a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Akor Adams. The striker made no mistake, calmly rounding the goalkeeper before slotting into an empty net to double the advantage and all but settle the contest.

Nigeria’s shot stopper, Nwabali.

From there, the Super Eagles displayed game management befitting a side with championship ambitions. They slowed the tempo, denied Algeria room to build momentum, and protected their clean sheet with authority as the North Africans struggled to find a response.

The result sends Nigeria into their 16th AFCON semi-final, where a heavyweight showdown with hosts Morocco awaits in Rabat. With momentum building and key players delivering at decisive moments, the Super Eagles continue to look like a team peaking at exactly the right time.
