KCCA reignited their push for the Uganda Premier League crown with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kitara under the lights at MTN Omondi Stadium on Friday.
Still smarting from their recent setback against SC Villa, the Kasasiro Boys responded with urgency and purpose, knowing anything short of victory would dent their ambitions. With leaders Vipers having dropped points earlier in the week, the stage was perfectly set for KCCA to capitalize—and they did just enough.
The game carried a sense of tension from the outset, with both sides aware of its significance in shaping the title race. Kitara, fresh from a resilient draw against Vipers, showed early intent, but it was KCCA who carved out the clearer openings.
Brian Jjara tested Kitara’s defense early on, while Lazaro Muhindo—facing his former club—added spark in the attacking third with a lively display. However, the visitors also posed a threat, particularly from dead-ball situations, with Living Kabon coming close to a spectacular opener from a corner.
The breakthrough arrived just before halftime when Saidi Mayanja’s quick thinking set up Joel Sserunjogi, who unleashed a precise low strike from distance to hand KCCA the lead.
Kitara responded with a wave of substitutions after the break, throwing numbers forward in search of an equalizer. Despite the pressure, KCCA held firm, showing defensive discipline and composure to protect their slender advantage.
The result lifts KCCA into second place on 48 points, trimming the gap to leaders Vipers to four and firmly keeping them in the title conversation. Meanwhile, Kitara missed a chance to tighten the race at the top.
KCCA now turn attention to a midweek trip to Entebbe UPPC, while Kitara will look to bounce back when they host Calvary in their next outing.
