The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) has launched the Ugandan-made King’s Baton Relay ahead of the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place from July 23rd to August 2nd. The unveiling event was held at the UOC headquarters in Lugogo and was graced by H.E. Tiffany Kirlew, Deputy High Commissioner from Britain to Uganda, as the Chief Guest.

The King’s Baton Relay

The Baton Relay is a symbol of the Commonwealth Games, and this year, each of the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories received their own baton, engineered in Glasgow from sustainably sourced Scottish ash. The batons were designed to be decorated in each country’s unique style, showcasing their creativity and cultural identity.

Uganda’s Participation

Uganda has a rich history of participating in the Commonwealth Games, dating back to 1954. In the 2022 Birmingham edition, Uganda fielded 72 athletes in 12 disciplines and won five medals, including three gold and two silver.

The Relay’s Significance

According to IOC Member William Blick, the King’s Baton Relay transcends sport and is a movement that weaves together community pride, creative expression, and environmental responsibility. The relay will tour various parts of Uganda, including the Ministry of Education and Sports, Kampala Parents, State House, Namboole, and Lake Victoria, before being taken to Glasgow for the games.

The King’s Baton Relay will follow this tour program:

  • Ministry of Education and Sports
  • Kampala Parents (during the National Swimming tournament)
  • State House
  • Namboole (during the Rugby Africa tournament)
  • Lake Victoria
  • Glasgow, Scotland (for the 2026 Commonwealth Games)

A Milestone Event

The 2026 official Baton Relay will be the longest-ever relay for a Commonwealth Games, highlighting the significance of this event and the excitement building up to the games.
