SC Villa delivered a statement performance under the lights at FUFA Stadium Kadiba, edging rivals KCCA FC 1-0 in a fiercely contested Uganda Premier League clash.

The victory not only handed Villa bragging rights in the Kampala Derby but also tightened the race at the top, lifting them to 44 points in fourth place—just one behind third-placed KCCA. Vipers SC remain top with 51 points, while Kitara FC sit second on 47.

The hosts started brightly, nearly capitalising on a defensive error inside the opening minutes, with Frank Ssebuufu forcing a goal-line clearance after pouncing on a loose pass from goalkeeper Mutwalibi Mugolofa. Villa continued to press early, with Hassan Mubiru coming close from a set piece that drifted narrowly wide.

Despite Villa’s fast start, KCCA gradually grew into the game, controlling possession and creating chances of their own. Shafik Nana Kwikiriza tested goalkeeper David Lukwago, while Herbert Achai’s long-range effort nearly produced an opener, only for the rebound to be squandered.

The deadlock persisted into halftime, with both sides showing flashes of quality in an evenly matched first half.

After the break, Villa reasserted their attacking intent, creating early opportunities before finally breaking through in the 58th minute. Mubiru rose to the occasion, finishing off a well-worked move set up by Ssebuufu to send the home crowd into celebration.

From there, Villa focused on maintaining their advantage, making tactical substitutions and staying compact defensively. KCCA responded with multiple changes and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but clear chances remained limited.

Late pressure from the visitors, including a series of set pieces, failed to break Villa’s resolve.

At full time, Villa held firm to secure a crucial win—one that could prove decisive in the closing stretch of the season.

Mubiru’s decisive strike not only earned him Man of the Match honours but also ensured Villa remain firmly in the hunt as the title race intensifies.
