It was a night of thrillers as Sunday night’s quarter-final fixtures in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) threw up stunning results as ten-time champions Nigeria were stunned and fairytale Malawi marched on to the semis.
Nigeria and Ghana both faced the prospect of World Cup qualification as well as a tie in the last four of the 2026 WAFCON.
Cameroon 1–0 Nigeria:
Cameroon registered one of the biggest upsets in WAFCON history as they overcame 10-time defending champions Nigeria in the space of a 1–0 win at the Larbi Zaouli stadium on Sunday night.
Cameroon displayed a solid defensive display to see off a strong attack from their continental rivals Nigeria who were desperately seeking to retain their title. The Lionesses registered the only goal of the match to frustrate the Super Falcons, who failed to register a shot on target.
Nigeria’s title defense comes to an end in the quarter-finals as Cameroon register their place in the last four, where they will face Morocco in the semi-finals, and qualified for the 2027 World Cup.
Malawi 2–1 Ghana:
In the second fixture of the day, Malawi continued their incredible journey in the 2026 WAFCON as they saw off Ghana 2–1 in a thrilling encounter.
After a goal each in either half left the visitors stunned at 1–1, Malawi registered a second goal in the second half to register a stunning win over their Group B rivals.
The win sees the Scorchers advance to the last four for the first time in their history.
Malawi’s sensational victory ensures that at least one dark horse will feature in the 2026 final after a shock defeat for three-time runners-up Ghana.
Malawi’s win also indicated they qualified for the 2027 World Cup.

Wed, Aug 12 Morocco vs Cameroon 11:00 PM EAT
Both fixtures will determine who will contest the 2026 WAFCON final which is scheduled for Sunday, August 16.
