With the league race heating up, Wananchi Hockey Club are eyeing a crucial win this weekend that could solidify their dominance at the top of the men’s standings. The defending champions take on Thunders this Sunday at Lugogo, in a match that could prove decisive in their campaign to retain the crown they’ve held for years.

Currently leading the table with 19 points from seven fixtures, Wananchi enjoy a four-point cushion over fierce rivals Kampala, who sit second with 15 points. A victory on Sunday would not only increase that gap but also send a strong message to the chasing pack as the second half of the season looms.

Kampala, who are expected to return to action next weekend, will be keeping a close eye on the results, while third-placed Weatherhead — just one point behind Kampala with 14 — are quietly building a case for a late title push.

The women’s league, meanwhile, takes a brief pause this weekend, but the race at the top remains razor-thin. Kampala and Wananchi-HDF are neck and neck at 13 points apiece, with defending champions Wananchi trailing by just one point in third. When action resumes, that top-three battle promises fireworks.

For Wananchi, Sunday’s task is simple — win and take another step toward sealing another chapter in their hockey legacy.
