Lukanga Boxing Club Clinches Seventh National Boxing Open Championship Title

The National Boxing Open Championships 2026 concluded in spectacular fashion on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala, with Lukanga Boxing Club crowned overall champions following a commanding performance across all categories—junior, youth, and elite.

Lukanga amassed an impressive 112 points, asserting their dominance throughout the tournament. Their tally included 30 points in the junior category, 43 points in youth, and 39 points in the elite division. Under the guidance of coach Lawrence Kalyango, the team showcased exceptional discipline, teamwork, and tactical brilliance.

This victory marks Lukanga Boxing Club’s seventh national title since 2017, adding to their previous triumphs in 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The 2020 and 2021 editions were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the junior category (ages 14–16), Lukanga led with 30 points, followed by Kira Boxing Club with 18 points.
They continued their strong showing in the youth division, collecting 43 points to finish ahead of Namungoona Boxing Club, which managed 16 points.

Lukanga completed a clean sweep by winning the elite category (18 years and above) with 39 points, while Cobap Boxing Club finished second with 27 points.

Ali Nsubuga from Bwaise Boxing Club was named the best male boxer, while Robinah Nabukalu from Kololo Boxing Club was awarded best female boxer. Patrick Opio was recognized as the best coach of the National Boxing Championship.

The championship attracted over 500 boxers from across Uganda. From this pool, 150 competitors qualified for Season Five of the Uganda Boxing Champions League, scheduled to begin on May 9, 2026.With their dominant performance, Lukanga Boxing Club and other top performers have positioned themselves as strong contenders heading into the upcoming league.

One of the tournament’s most electrifying bouts came in the light welterweight division, where Reagan Magumba—also known for his association with musician Alien Skin—defeated Mulema Denis in a thrilling contest that captivated fans.

Magumba’s victory further cemented his reputation as one of the rising talents in his division.

Federation president Moses Muhangi expressed optimism about the future of the sport. He emphasized that all category winners will feature in the upcoming Champions League and reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to developing boxing from grassroots to elite levels.

Muhangi also highlighted plans to strengthen infrastructure and integrate amateur and professional boxing under one unified administration.
