Heart of Midlothian head coach Derek McInnes has praised new signing Rogers Mato as an attacking spark, expressing delight after the Ugandan forward completed a move to Tynecastle during the current transfer window.

Mato links up with the Scottish side on a short-term loan from North Macedonian outfit FK Vardar until the close of the campaign, with the switch still pending international clearance and approval from the Scottish FA. A permanent chapter is already mapped out, with the 22-year-old set to sign a three-year deal once his Vardar contract runs out at season’s end.

McInnes hailed the club’s recruitment efforts and believes the forward will add a new edge to his squad. “The club has done great work to bring Rogers in and I’m delighted to have him available,” the Hearts boss said. “He’s direct, aggressive in attack and constantly looks to put defenders under pressure.”

The Uganda international arrives in Edinburgh with growing pedigree. He has already earned 41 caps for the Cranes, scoring eight goals, including one at the recent 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
His club form has been just as eye-catching. Rogers was in prolific touch in the Balkans, netting 12 goals in just 13 appearances to help fire Vardar to the top of their league standings.

“He’s come in, met the squad and settled quickly,” McInnes added. “He’s made a strong first impression and we’re excited to see what he brings as we work with him over the coming weeks.”
