Uganda Women rugby National team coach Muhammad Athio has urged his players to stay mentally fit to be able to beat Kenya in their opening fixture of the Africa cup in Nairobi on Saturday May 23-2026.
Athio made the appeal on Tuesday after the team flag off by National Council of Sports assistant general secretary Mr. Oluga Joseph who also urged the team to bring back positive results.
“Government has fully funded this trip, and what we expect from you is bringing back good results that lifts the brand of Uganda,” Oluga said.
Oluga made the appeal at the team flag off at Lugogo yesterday.
The 28-women squad sponsored by Nile Special leaves May 20-226 to Nairobi and will open the campaign against hosts Kenya on Saturday afternoon at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA).
Back to Athio, he said that as coaches they have done all it takes to see that the team is in good shape and what is remaining is their duty.
“Mental attitude is key in this tournament because we are playing the best sides on the continent,” Athi o Said.

“We have amix of both experience and young stars who made it to the team on merit and I am confident they will deliver,” Athio added.
Before the Uganda game, South Africa will take on Madagascar and the continental tournament will have the top three countries qualify to play the World Cup qualifiers next year.
Uganda will then face South Africa and climax the campaign with Madagascar on Sunday May 31 at the same venue.
The winner of the one-week tournament will qualify to Women International Tournament (WVX) tier 2 in Europe which is an elite performance rugby competition created by world rugby to lift the standards of women rugby.
The team traveling for the tournament include, Janipher Nakale, Evelyn Asaba, Phoebe Nakalembe, Christine Kokoi, Doreen Mbabazi, Doreen Sijali, Yvonne Najuma, Phiona Natongo, Fazira Namukwaya, Leona Acen, Proscovia Mukyala and helen Acanit.
The others are, Peace Nemira, Cabrine Kirabo, Angella Nanyonjo (Cpt), Goretti Babirye, Josephin Babirye, Juliet Nandawula, Bushira Namutebi, Justine Anguchia, Peace Lekuru (assist Cpt), Grace Nabaggala, Unity Namulala, Getrude Kateesa, Rachael Mufuwa and Mastula Nambozo.
