The 13th SOM Chess Gulu Tournament concluded at the Koro Sports Outreach Center in Gulu District, Uganda with notable performances in both the Men’s open and Women’s Categories.
Anena Prossy demonstrated her prowess, clinching the championship among women after securing six points from eight games. Opakrwot Allan emerged victorious in the men’s open with eight points in tight game with Wamoya Gilbert.
The three days SOM Chess Academy Gulu Tournament attracted impressive turn out of 100 skilled players from diverse corners. This edition had children from several village centers like Pugwinyi 38km, Lagutu 35km, Gulu town 7km, Aywee 5km, Opong 10km, Abwoch 3km to the center. The participants were categorized in 4 sections: Open, Ladies, U14, U18 and U10 in both girls and boys.
After 8 rounds, different winners emerged champions for the different categories and they were awarded with different prizes such as trophies, medals and Certificates.
“This win catalyzes me to intensify my preparation and deliver a strong performance while representing our nation on global stage,” Opakrwot Allan remarked.
Anena Prossy won the women’s open category expressed her joy with Roramedia.
“I have been actively participating in tournaments leading up to this championship, allowing me to implement various strategies that ultimately led to this victory. This win not only signify personal growth but also validates the effort of my coaches,” he stated.
Robert Katende, the proprietor of SOM Chess Academy, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the tournament 13th edition’s turnout and praised the supporters and the organization team.
“Thanks you our partners, friends, and well wishers for your continued support towards this work of restoring hope and transforming lives through chess, one move at a time, since 2004,” he stated.
