The Mafu Mafu Rally Team boss, Ponsiano Lwakataka promises tears as he unveils new VW Proto
From a dusty areas of Masaka to becoming one of Uganda’s most feared rally drivers, Ponsiano Lwakataka’s journey hits 25 years next month.
The 2005 and 2007 National Rally Champion will celebrate the milestone in style — with a special Sprint Rally at Garuga on 20th September.
And this time, it’s not just about celebration. It’s about a statement.
Lwakataka will use the Garuga sprint to fundraise for his latest beast — the Volkswagen Proto car previously owned by the late Rajiv Ruparelia.
The machine, one of the most advanced rally cars to ever touch Ugandan soil, is set to make Lwakataka even more dangerous in the forests.
“I have been defeating them in an inferior car but with this, let them cry for themselves early,” Lwakataka warned.
For 25 years, Lwakataka has been the definition of resilience in Ugandan motorsport. Racing in an aging Subaru N12B against modern R5s and Proto cars, he has still managed to out-muscle, out-drive and out-last younger, better-funded crews.
Fans call him “Mafu Mafu” — not just for his speed, but for his never-say-die spirit. From financial struggles to mechanical heartbreaks, he has stayed on the stages when many would have parked for good.
The Garuga Sprint is expected to attract all top NRC crews, fans, and sponsors who have been part of his 25-year journey. Organizers say part of the proceeds will go towards preparing the VW Proto for the 2025/26 championship run.
If the car is ready in time, September 20th in Garuga could be the first time Ugandan fans see Lwakataka unleash the VW Proto.
And if his words are anything to go by, the next chapter of Ugandan rallying might just belong to him again.
