Makerere v IUIU
Makerere University’s once-glorious football legacy faces a stern test of character today as the 2012 champions battle Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) in a make-or-break Pepsi University Football League Group E clash at the Makerere Arena.
Once feared opponents, the “Ivory Tower Boys” now find themselves fighting for survival. After a 1-0 loss to Kumi University, Makerere sit bottom of the group with no points, and their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages hang by a thread. With this season’s single-round format offering no second chances, defeat today would all but seal their early elimination.
The group has lived up to its billing as the “group of death” packed with tournament giants such as Uganda Christian University (UCU), Ndejje University, and last season’s semifinalists IUIU. Kumi’s impressive start has further complicated Makerere’s path, while debutants King Ceasor University have struggled to find footing.
As it stands, Kumi and Ndejje lead with four points each, UCU and IUIU trail close behind on three, while Makerere and King Ceasor are yet to register a point. But today’s fixture offers the hosts a lifeline a chance to reignite belief and alter the group dynamics.
Head coach William Kasozi is banking on home advantage and fan support to inspire a turnaround.
“We’ve been here before, and we know how to respond,” Kasozi said. “This is not just about three points; it’s about restoring pride. The players know what’s at stake, and I expect a reaction.”
IUIU, on the other hand, arrive in Kampala full of confidence after a commanding 3-0 win over King Ceasor University. Under coach Haruna Keba, the Mbale-based side have developed a reputation for structure and clinical finishing traits that could trouble a Makerere side still searching for rhythm and confidence.
For Makerere, this is more than a football match it’s a fight for identity, pride, and redemption. A win could spark a comeback story. A loss, however, would mark another painful chapter in the slow decline of one of university football’s most decorated names.
