Namuwongo Blazers stand on the brink of history as they gear up to face City Oilers in Game Six of the National Basketball League (NBL) finals at Lugogo. With a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, the Blazers are just one victory away from claiming their first-ever championship and ending a decade of Oilers dominance.

City Oilers have been the undisputed powerhouse of Ugandan basketball, winning ten consecutive league titles since 2013 and crushing every challenger in their path. Yet this season, the Blazers fuelled by former Oilers stars James Okello, Ivan Muhwezi, Jimmy Enabu, and Tonny Drilleba have turned the script on their former teammates.

“It’s not just about winning a championship,” Okello said after leading Namuwongo to a Game Five victory with 17 points. “It’s about showing that hard work and belief can overcome even the most established dynasty.”

Game Five highlighted the Blazers’ resurgence, with the Oilers struggling from three-point range, making just 3-of-18 attempts. While Kurt-Curry Wegscheider and Chad Bowie put up 15 and 14 points respectively for the Oilers, it wasn’t enough to stop the tide.

Now, all eyes are on Wednesday’s showdown, where the Blazers have a chance to rewrite Ugandan basketball history and signal the end of an era. If they succeed, it will be more than a maiden title it will be a symbolic passing of the torch from a ten-year dynasty to a new basketball powerhouse.

For fans, the stakes have never been higher: a potential upset, a changing of the guard, and a Game Six that could define the future of the sport in Uganda.
