Uganda is set to step onto football’s global stage for the very first time on Wednesday, as the U17 national team the Uganda Cubs face Canada in their opening Group K fixture at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.
The Cubs’ qualification earlier this year was itself a landmark achievement. In April, the young Cranes secured a 2-1 victory over Gambia in a tense AFCON U17 play-off, punching Uganda’s ticket to a World Cup tournament for the first time in history.

“This is a proud moment, not just for me as a coach, but for the entire country,” said head coach Brian Ssenyondo. “Playing at the pinnacle of world football, at any age, is a dream come true. For Uganda to finally be part of that experience is incredible.”
Uganda joins a challenging Group K alongside France, Chile, and Canada. The top two from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 32. Ssenyondo and his staff have been meticulously analyzing each opponent in preparation for the debut.
“France will show us true European football, a style their senior teams are known for. Chile bring a mix of South American flair and African energy, and Canada, though experienced at this level, has yet to register a win in the tournament,” Ssenyondo explained.

The coach also promised that fans will witness a dynamic brand of football from his young squad. “We are a team that plays with freedom, passing, counter-attacking, and a sense of unity. On the pitch, we are a team; off it, we are a family. The world will see an exciting, skilful Uganda team that is ready to make its mark.”
As Uganda prepares for its historic debut, anticipation is building not only among local supporters but across the continent. The Cubs are carrying the hopes of a nation eager to see Uganda compete with the world’s best at last.
