The Uganda Cubs’ dream World Cup debut is hanging in the balance — and they know it. After a heartbreaking late collapse against Canada, Brian Ssenyondo’s young side must regroup quickly as they face Chile in a decisive Group K encounter at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Doha on Saturday.

For Uganda, it’s not just about staying in the tournament — it’s about proving they belong on the global stage. Their 2–1 loss to Canada on Wednesday was a harsh lesson in game management, as two late set-piece goals wiped away what seemed like a historic win in the making.

Now, the focus has shifted from excitement to execution. Ssenyondo has emphasized composure and structure above all else. “This level punishes the smallest mistakes,” he reflected during training. “We’ve worked on staying compact and focused till the final whistle. The boys understand what’s at stake.”

Despite the result, Uganda’s performance earned admiration back home — full of energy, courage, and flashes of creativity. Forward James Bogere, who struck in the 25th minute against Canada, has quickly become the poster boy for this promising generation. He will once again lead the frontline alongside Richard Okello and Isma Magala, as the Cubs hunt for their first-ever World Cup victory.

Chile, too, are licking their wounds after a 2–0 defeat to France in their opening match. Both sides enter the tie knowing defeat would likely end their hopes of progression — setting up what promises to be an intense, high-stakes contest.

Uganda will draw confidence from their pre-tournament camp in Dubai, where they gained valuable exposure against Latin American opposition including Venezuela, Panama, and Paraguay. While results weren’t favorable, the experience of facing technically sharp teams could prove crucial against the Chileans.

Meanwhile, in the group’s other fixture, Canada and France — both victors on matchday one — meet with a chance to seal early qualification to the knockout stage.

For Ssenyondo’s young Cubs, however, the mission is simple: defend with discipline, strike with belief, and write a new chapter in Uganda’s football story.
