The National Basketball League Finals resume tonight at the Lugogo Indoor Arena with the Namuwongo Blazers determined to prove that their Game Three triumph was no fluke when they meet the City Oilers once again.
After falling behind 2–0 in the best-of-seven series, the Blazers roared back to life on Wednesday with an 80–70 statement win that reignited belief in their championship ambitions and disrupted the Oilers’ long-standing rhythm.
It was a performance built on grit and balance Peter Obleng setting the tone with 20 points, Arthur Wanyoto adding 18, and Nigerian forward Anthony Chuckwurah providing 14. Yet, the real spark came from the return of Tonny Drileba, whose poise and leadership stabilized the Blazers’ offense and gave them an edge in tempo.
For once, the ten-time defending champions looked mortal. The Oilers were outmuscled on the boards (54–41) and got little production from their bench, managing just a single point in that department. Head coach Andrew Tendo will be demanding a far stronger response especially from his stars Kurt-Curry Wegscheider and Chad Bowie, whose influence was limited in Game Three.
Tonight’s clash could define the direction of the finals. A win for the Oilers puts them on the brink of an unprecedented 11th straight title; a Blazers victory, however, would level the series and shift the psychological balance.
The momentum may have tilted slightly toward Namuwongo, but experience still resides with the champions. Expect intensity, adjustments, and no shortage of drama as the battle for supremacy in Ugandan basketball heats up.
