Depth told the story as Nam Blazers outlasted UCU Canons 68-60 in Game One of the National Basketball League semifinals on Tuesday night at Lugogo. While UCU leaned heavily on their starters, the Blazers’ second unit swung the balance, pouring in 30 points that proved the difference in a contest where both sides labored offensively.

The Canons battled to stay alive, tying the game twice in the third quarter behind Joel Kayiira’s double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. But every time momentum seemed to shift, the Blazers’ reserves stepped up to steady the ship.

Ivan Muhwezi top-scored with 15 points, but it was the supporting cast that gave Blazers the edge. Joel Lukoji and Anthony Chuckwurah chipped in 12 and 10 points, while Arthur Wanyoto’s dominance on the boards—15 rebounds—denied UCU crucial second chances.

Neither team found rhythm from long range, yet the Blazers controlled the key details: 54 rebounds to UCU’s 50, and more critically, punishing their opponents’ 18 turnovers.

For UCU coach, Nicholas Natuhereza faces a quick turnaround ahead of Game Two on Friday. Solving the turnover riddle and squeezing more production from the bench will be vital if the Canons are to avoid slipping into a deep series hole.
