Football Federation Burundi (FFB) has withdrawn their team from the forthcoming TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) – CECAFA qualifiers.
The tournament slated for December 14-27th in Uganda was set to attract eight teams after the draw that were conducted two weeks back in Kampala.
Manirakiza Jeremie, the Football Federation of Burundi (FFB) General Secretary communicated that they have withdrawn the team because of issues to do with eligibility of players.
“We communicate with regret the withdrawal of the U-17 team from the CECAFA tournament in Uganda. The decision was reached after some players were not found ineligible according to the report sent by the team of CAF doctors after earlier Magnetic Resonance Imaging tests conducted,” said the communication.
Burundi now joins Ethiopia as the two teams that have withdrawn after the draw for the competition was conducted two weeks ago.
Yusuf Mossi, the CECAFA Competitions Director has made it clear that with only two teams Uganda and Tanzania remaining in Group A, one more team will be moved from Group B to make it three teams for each group.
The six teams that will battle for the two slots include; Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan.
