City Oilers have sent a clear message of intent by reinforcing their ranks with two high-profile international signings as they look to revive their 2025 National Basketball League campaign.

The 10-time league champions have acquired the services of Canadian guard Chad Bowie and Central African Republic forward Kurt-Curry Axel Wegscheider — both formerly of Kepler Basketball Club in Rwanda.

Bowie arrives with a strong résumé and serious pedigree. The son of former NBA shooting guard Anthony Bowie (Orlando Magic), Chad was a standout performer in the 2023/24 Rwandan top division, where he was crowned regular season MVP. Known for his scoring efficiency and defensive hustle, the Canadian led the league with 410 points, topped the charts in steals with 62, and finished third in three-point shooting with 54 makes from deep. Before his stint in Rwanda, Bowie honed his skills in North America, studying kinesiology and playing in collegiate circuits across the U.S. and Canada.

Joining him at the Oilers is Wegscheider, a versatile wing who brings both size and athleticism. The Central African previously lined up for Bangui SC in this year’s Basketball Africa League (BAL), where he went head-to-head with the Oilers. His familiarity with African basketball and physical style of play is expected to provide immediate impact.

Interestingly, both players reunite under familiar circumstances — they played for Kepler, which is now coached by former City Oilers tactician Mandy Juruni. Their departure from Juruni’s setup adds another layer of intrigue, as they now aim to lift an Oilers side currently sitting in ninth place with a 7-7 record from 14 outings.

With the league entering its business end, the Oilers’ latest additions could prove pivotal in turning around their season — not just to make the playoffs, but to chase an unprecedented 11th league title.
