At the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, the third-place playoff at CHAN PAMOJA 2024 was not just about medals, but also about pride, character, and the ability of two coaches to rally their squads after semi-final heartbreak. In the end, Senegal’s Souleymane Diallo left with a bronze medal and vindication, while Sudan’s Kwesi Appiah walked away with admiration despite defeat.
Senegal secured back-to-back podium finishes after edging Sudan 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. The result underlined the Lions of Teranga’s growing consistency at this tournament, even if they fell short of defending their crown. For Sudan, the wait for a third CHAN medal continues, but their spirited run — achieved against the backdrop of domestic football turmoil — earned respect across the continent.

Appiah’s Falcons of Jediane made the brighter start, taking the lead inside six minutes when Mohamed Tia Asad rose to head in Abdel Raouf Yagoub’s corner. The goal gave Sudan early control, with goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja producing fine saves to frustrate Senegal until the interval.
But Diallo’s side showed patience and resilience. Pushing higher after the break, they equalised in the 58th minute through Seyni Ndiaye’s well-timed header, following excellent wing play by Ousseynou Seck. From then on, Senegal dictated the rhythm, though Sudan’s counterattacks — coupled with Abooja’s heroics — kept the contest alive.
With no extra-time in play-offs, penalties loomed large. Sudan faltered first, missing twice, while Senegal’s takers stayed perfect. Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé and Libasse Guèye all converted, sealing a 4-2 shootout win.
Diallo hailed his young group’s response to semi-final disappointment against Morocco:
“This was about character. The boys showed maturity and refused to go home empty-handed.”
Appiah, though hurt by the loss, emphasised perspective: “With so little preparation, the players gave their all. Sudanese football proved its resilience, and I am proud of them.”

While Senegal celebrate resilience and a bronze medal, Sudan return home with lessons and pride. Focus now shifts to Nairobi, where Morocco and Madagascar contest Saturday’s final at Moi International Sports Centre — the closing chapter of a memorable CHAN 2024.
