Express FC’s troubled 2025/26 campaign has taken another decisive turn, with four senior players leaving the club to join NEC FC.
The departures were confirmed through the club’s official communication channels, formally ending the stay of Richard Basangwa, Muhammad Kagawa, Rashid Kawawa and Hakim Wandera.
Each exit leaves a different void.
Basangwa brought flexibility across the frontline during a period of transition, while Kagawa was recruited to inject creativity into Express’ attacking play. Kawawa’s energy and movement in midfield offered balance, and Wandera had been trusted within the defensive structure as the Red Eagles attempted to stabilise at the back.

The decision to part ways with four experienced players at this stage has sparked debate among supporters, many of whom expected reinforcements rather than farewells. With the league entering a demanding phase, Express now face the challenge of regrouping with fewer options at their disposal.
Questions are also being asked of the club’s leadership, as pressure mounts to explain how the departures fit into a broader recovery plan. Once a benchmark of consistency and ambition in Ugandan football, Express are now fighting to rediscover their identity.
As the second half of the season approaches, all eyes will be on the Red Eagles’ next move—whether this clear-out is the first step toward renewal or another gamble in a campaign already heavy with uncertainty.

That’s a real shame about the players leaving Express, it’s going to be a tough season ahead for them.
