The much-anticipated Kampala derby lived up to its billing as KCCA FC defeated rivals SC Villa 2-1 in a high-intensity clash at Mandela National Stadium on Saturday evening.
However, the day’s football narrative was equally shaped by off-field drama after the scheduled fixture between Kitara FC and Vipers SC failed to take place, following Vipers’ decision to boycott until FUFA addresses their concerns over the new Uganda Premier League format and revenue distribution model.

Vipers had earlier written to the federation stating that they would not honor any league fixtures until what they termed “unfair and unilateral reforms” are resolved — a move that left fans in Hoima disappointed and cast a cloud over the league weekend.
Still, attention later turned to Namboole, where the Kampala derby delivered its usual spectacle of tension, passion, and late drama.

First Half – Ahimbisibwe Breaks the Deadlock
The early stages were evenly contested, with both sides trading spells of possession. SC Villa pressed high but struggled to find a breakthrough. KCCA took the lead in the 30th minute through Ivan Ahimbisibwe, who calmly slotted home after a neat assist from Ashiraf Mugume.
Villa’s attempts to equalize before halftime were blunted by a compact KCCA defense, and the first half ended 1-0 to the hosts.
Second Half – Villa’s Fightback and KCCA’s Response
The visitors began the second half with renewed urgency, forcing KCCA into defensive errors. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Yiga Najib converted from the penalty spot to level matters.
The game intensified, with both teams collecting a flurry of yellow cards as tempers flared. Substitutions from both benches aimed to tilt the balance, but it was KCCA’s late change that proved decisive.
Substitute Umar Lutalo, introduced in the 84th minute, became the hero when he struck a brilliant direct free kick in the 88th minute to restore KCCA’s lead. Despite four minutes of added time, SC Villa couldn’t find a response.

Final Whistle and Stats
KCCA FC held firm to secure a 2-1 victory in front of an electric crowd. Ivan Ahimbisibwe, who scored and put in a tireless shift, was named Man of the Match.
