Lessons, Not Losses: Tanzania Refines, CAR Rejoices in Milestone Draw

At the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday night, there were no goals between Tanzania and the Central African Republic (CAR) — but there were plenty of takeaways.

For the Taifa Stars, already through to the quarter-finals, the match was an exercise in fine-tuning and reflection. For CAR, it was a statement of pride, resilience, and history — their very first point at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) stage.

Tanzania: A Test Beyond the Scoreline

Hemed Suleiman’s men had been flawless until this match, three straight wins powering them into the last eight. But the coach was quick to stress that the draw had value of its own.

“This was about lessons,” Suleiman said afterwards. “Our target was qualification, and we achieved that. But matches like this remind us what we must improve. We created chances but we lacked the finishing edge. Now, we take those lessons into the quarter-finals.”

The Taifa Stars pressed hard but found no way past CAR’s disciplined defence, and the coach admitted that inefficiency in front of goal was the one concern.

“Scoring in knockout games is vital. We must re-evaluate our attacking approach,” he said. “Still, I’m proud of the players. They gave their all, and we remain confident in the team’s future.”

For Tanzania, the draw wasn’t about disappointment — it was about preparation.

Central African Republic: Pride in a First Point

On the other side, CAR had a different reason to smile. Having already been eliminated, their goal was not qualification but dignity. And in that respect, the draw felt like a victory.

Coach Sébastien Ngato revealed the message he gave to his players: “Losing is forbidden.”

“They delivered,” he said. “We were against a strong side, away from home, and still earned a point. That is something to build on.”

For CAR, this tournament has been historic in more ways than one. “It is the first time since independence that we have participated in CHAN,” Ngato noted. “This year we also reached the finals with the under-17 and under-20 teams. For us, this is the start of something.”

With a young squad, Ngato stressed patience: “We are learning, and we must continue to grow. Every match gave us something new. Now the focus is on strengthening our attack and preparing for the future.”

Different Journeys, Same Spirit

In the end, both teams left the pitch satisfied — Tanzania with a clearer picture of what lies ahead, CAR with their pride restored and history made.

A goalless draw, yes. But at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, it was never just about goals. It was about growth, resilience, and the different ways teams measure progress at CHAN.
