Zambia striker Barbra Banda, Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman and South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams were among big winners at the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday.
The Atalanta and Super Eagle’s forward, Lookman was named CAF Men’s Player of the Year following in the footsteps of fellow country men, Victor Osimhen, who won the award in 2023.
This mad it the first time for Nigeria to have back-to-back winners in the Men’s award since Nwankwo Kanu (1996) and Victor Ikpeba (1997) were honoured.
At the same stage, Orlando Pride and Zambia’s Banda was also crowned the 2024 Women Player of the Year after her performance in the USA National Women’s Soccer League where she helped her team to win the NWSL Shield and Championship, scoring the decisive goal in the final against Washington Spirit.
For Zambia, she scored hat-trick at Paris Olympics 2024 which was her third in Olympic Games football, an all-time record in the competition.
South Africa’s goalie, Williams won the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year and Men’s Interclub Player of the Year awards on the night.
His penalty saves at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023 are still remembered. He saved four in the quarter-final shootout win against Cape Verde as he captained South Africa to the bronze medal.
The 32-year-old also helped Mamelodi Sundowns set a joint record low of just 11 goals conceded in 30 games in the South African Premiership as they eased to a seventh domestic league title in succession.
