A new chapter has opened in Mark William Lukwago’s rugby journey, with the versatile back officially joining KOBs after drawing the curtain on a long and loyal spell at Entebbe Mongers.
The move, confirmed at the start of February, ends a one-club senior career that saw Lukwago grow from a promising schoolboy into one of the most reliable backs in Ugandan rugby. Entebbe Mongers publicly acknowledged his departure on February 1, paying tribute to a player whose commitment and influence spanned several seasons.
An old boy of St Mary’s College, Kisubi, Lukwago has been synonymous with Entebbe for much of his life, making his switch to Naguru a significant personal and professional step. It also comes at a time when Mongers have been navigating a challenging period, having slipped from title contenders in their prime years to mid-table regulars and, more recently, a tense relegation fight.
Lukwago’s reputation was largely forged in the fast-paced sevens format, where his performances earned him national recognition and international appearances. In the 15-a-side game, his value lies in his adaptability. Comfortable at fullback, capable of stepping in at fly-half, and equally dangerous on the wing, he offers KOBs depth, experience and attacking threat across the backline.
At Legends, he joins a competitive unit that already features established names such as Ibrahim Khemis and Karim Arinaitwe, alongside emerging talents like Rasul Abiriga. His arrival fits neatly into KOBs’ ongoing transition, blending seasoned campaigners with youthful energy as the club reshapes for the future.
While Mongers will feel the absence of Lukwago and fellow departures like Robin Odrua, they have begun rebuilding, bolstering their ranks with new attacking options including Rugby Cranes winger Shakim Ssembusi. For Lukwago, however, the focus now shifts to making an immediate impact in blue and white as he embraces the next challenge of his career.
