Reigning champions Prisons reignited their National Netball Super League title charge with a dramatic 47-46 victory over table-topping UCU in a thrilling showdown at Nakivubo Stadium.

Prisons came into the high-stakes clash fresh off a commanding 53-38 win over Busia earlier in the day—a result that kept them firmly in the championship mix ahead of the blockbuster encounter with the league leaders.

UCU, determined to extend their lead at the summit, looked sharp from the onset. The first quarter set the tone for a tightly contested affair, with both sides trading turnovers and goals in equal measure. UCU edged it 13-12, but the closeness of the scoreline signaled a war of attrition was underway.

The second period saw UCU momentarily pull away, capitalizing on a pair of unforced Prisons errors to build a six-goal cushion by halftime, leading 27-21. Their composure and swift ball movement looked set to hand them a statement win of their own. But Prisons had other plans.

A wave of inspired substitutions in the second half turned the tide. The entrance of Sylvia Nanyonga (WD), Stella Nanfuka (GK), and Hadijah Nakabuye (GA), along with Joyce Nakibuule’s shift to wing attack, injected new energy into the champions’ ranks.

Nanfuka’s aerial dominance and Nanyonga’s relentless hustle began to crack UCU’s rhythm. The duo disrupted the feeding lanes and forced crucial turnovers, including a pivotal double-play error from UCU’s Winnie Isoto. By the end of the third quarter, Prisons had clawed back level at 35-all.

UCU responded early in the final quarter with another surge, regaining a five-goal buffer thanks to sharp shooting and a steal from Linda Muzigo. But their lead didn’t last long.

Prisons’ resilience shone through in the dying minutes. A sequence of defensive heroics, highlighted by Nanyonga’s game-changing interception and a final crucial pick by Lilian Ajio, set up a six-goal unanswered run that flipped the game on its head.

Prisons held firm under late pressure to snatch the narrowest of wins—dealing UCU their second loss of the season and injecting fresh life into the title race.

Now on 11 points, Prisons sit just five behind UCU and back in serious contention with momentum clearly on their side.
