It all comes down to one match. This afternoon, Namboole Stadium becomes the battleground where Uganda’s Rugby Cranes will lock horns with long-time rivals Kenya in a Rugby Africa Cup quarterfinal that could shape their World Cup destiny.

Uganda’s path to France 2027 is on a knife edge, and nothing less than perfection will do. With the knockout format offering no room for slip-ups, the Cranes must deliver a flawless performance against a side that’s beaten them twice in their last competitive encounters.

The ghosts of last year’s Elgon Cup still linger. Kenya edged Uganda 27–25 in a nail-biting first leg before dominating 21–5 in the return fixture. Their physicality and set-piece superiority left the Cranes chasing shadows.

But Uganda has since reshaped its rugby roadmap. The appointment of veteran South African coach Nollis Morais signaled a shift in ambition. Alongside head coach Fred Mudoola and his technical team, Morais has instilled fresh tactical discipline, clearer roles, and a long-term vision. Zane Kerchner’s addition as backs coach has also brought renewed energy to the team’s offensive structure.

Training camps began in February, giving the Cranes valuable time to gel.
Their opponents, however, are no less prepared. Kenya, led by Jerome Paarwater, have sharpened their game with seven test matches in South Africa. They arrive in Kampala battle-tested and equally hungry for a ticket to the World Cup.

For Morais, today’s clash presents one of the most intense coaching challenges of his career. The single-elimination format offers brutal stakes, win and you’re one step closer to rugby’s grandest stage; lose, and it’s back to the drawing board.

Should Uganda win, they’ll advance to the semi-finals with a direct line to World Cup qualification. A loss would still keep their hopes alive through the repechage round, which will be played in Kampala the following weekend.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. The fans, the coaches, the players they all know this is more than just a match. This is a moment that could define a generation of Ugandan rugby.
