After a harsh wake-up call against Senegal, Uganda’s Silverbacks head into Thursday’s group stage clash with Mali determined to turn the page at AfroBasket 2025 in Angola. The 88-53 loss to the tournament favourites exposed gaps in execution and depth, but it also offered a blueprint for growth.
Without star forward Ishmail Wainright, Uganda struggled to match Senegal’s speed and physicality, highlighted by a staggering 21-0 run that swung momentum decisively. Turnovers piled up (20), three-point attempts floundered (2-of-22), and a rebounding deficit of 29 (38-67) underscored the Silverbacks’ uphill battle on both ends.
Head coach George Galanopoulos acknowledged the challenges but stressed a measured response.
“It was tough, no doubt, but we’ve faced similar setbacks before. The opening loss to Senegal isn’t the end — we just need to adjust, focus on fundamentals, and improve little by little.”
Injury concerns add another layer of uncertainty. Forward Jacksen Moni, who contributed 10 points against Senegal, faces a fitness test ahead of the Mali game, leaving Uganda’s frontcourt thinner than desired.
Mali, meanwhile, are equally eager for redemption after falling 74-59 to Egypt. Both teams are still searching for a first win, making this Thursday encounter pivotal. With only the group winner earning an automatic quarterfinal berth, and second and third-place finishers heading to the Round of 16, the stakes could hardly be higher.
For Uganda, it’s a test of resilience and tactical acumen; for Mali, it’s about bouncing back from disappointment. Victory could secure a crucial step toward keeping AfroBasket 2025 dreams alive.
