St. Lawrence University (SLAU) secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Ndejje University in the first leg of their Pepsi University Football League quarterfinal held in Kavule, Mpigi.

The match began dramatically, with Ronnie Ziraba scoring for SLAU just 18 seconds after kickoff, before any Ndejje player had touched the ball.

Despite this early setback, Ndejje responded in the 54th minute when Joseph Mutaka capitalized on a rebound to equalize.

However, in the 65th minute, a defensive miscommunication between Ndejje defender Clement Ebasu and goalkeeper Fred Ochen allowed SLAU’s Derrick Kato to tap in the winning goal.

Ndejje pressed for another equalizer, but SLAU’s defense held firm, giving them a slim advantage heading into the return leg scheduled for next week in Luwero.

SLAU’s recent performances in the University Football League have been notable. However, in March 2024, SLAU faced disciplinary action and was banned from the league for two seasons due to fielding ineligible players. This ban was subsequently lifted, allowing them to participate in the current season.

The return leg against Ndejje University next week on Wednesday will be crucial for both teams, with a spot in the semifinals at stake.
